HAVANA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Cuba is a nation of peace and poses no threat to the United States or any other country, the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU) said Friday.

"The U.S. government knows ... perfectly well that Cuba is not an extraordinary threat to the U.S. or to any country. We are a nation of peace, and Cuba's peaceful practice has been constantly demonstrated," ACNU President Norma Goicochea told a press conference in Havana.

Goicochea was referring to an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Jan. 29, 2026, which imposed an oil blockade on the island and described Cuba as an "unusual and extraordinary" threat to the United States.

She warned that any military intervention would result in deaths among civilians, particularly children, women, older adults, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

Goicochea also criticized the "illegal and misleading" charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice recently against former Cuban leader Raul Castro over the 1996 downing of two aircraft operated by the anti-Castro group Brothers to the Rescue.

Castro, 94, was Cuba's minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces at the time. Havana maintains that the aircraft were shot down in Cuban airspace and that Cuba acted in legitimate self-defense.

The association called on the international community to demand an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba, remove the island from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, and repeal the executive orders issued on Jan. 29 and May 1, 2026.
